"Turn Off Computer" is missing

G

Guest

I have been tweaking and optimizing settings (the best I can) on my notebook
with XP Home. Suddenly, the "Turn Off Computer" button (with Standby,
Shutdown, Restart" options) went missing. i.e: I hit "Start" and the only
icon that shows up is "Log Off".

This happens only on my main user account. On a "guest" account, the "Turn
Off Computer" icon is still there.

I suspect it's a registry problem (or something like that). I've never
dared to do anything with my registry.

All help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Neil,

Thanks for your response to my post " "Turn Off Computer" is missing".

The solution looks very do-able, except for one thing; see below:

(From the article you cited...)

"NOTE: Backup the Registry before modifying. See this article for more
information.

Open Registry Editor by typing REGEDIT.EXE in the Start, Run dialog.

Navigate to the following locations:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Policies \ Explorer

-and-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Policies \ Explorer

In the right-pane, double-click the value NoClose and set it to 0.

Restart Windows for the changes to take effect "
==============================================

When I get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE etc, what I find at "Explorer" is three
columns:

Name Type Data
(default) REG_SZ (value not set)

What do I do with this?

Thanks

Nothing. There is no policy restrictions to delete.

Was the "NoClose" policy restriction at the
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] location?

William,

Thank you!

Yes, "No Close" policy restriction policy was found at the other location.

It's late here so I'll get a night's sleep and will do this in the morning.
I really appreciate the excellent responses I've gotten.

One further point
You may have deleted the variable
(I assume XP is the same as Win 98)

Create the variable as a DWORD variable. A few years (before I set up
adequate security) ago my kids managed to download a "backdoor" trojan
an somebody not only changed the variable, but the variable type, with
very strange results. It took me ages to sort the problem out, and then
only by comparing the registries in 2 computers.

Good luck!

Hi,

I did a search for your problem originally in google and found the link I
suggested to you. Having looked into my registry I can see your problem
with:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Policies \ Explorer

do you have any more luck with:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Policies \ Explorer

there should be what looks like a folder in the LH pane called "explorer" if
you highlight that do you have the DWORD "noclose" in the RH pane.

I also found this:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/vbs.ddv.b.html

I'm not familiar with the problem but was attempting to offer a solution
from a search on google

see:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=noclose+value+xp&meta=

best of luck.

Thanks, all!!

I'm getting my confidence up.

Here's what my registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER.......current
version.....policies
looks like:

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
ClearRecen.. REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
NoClose REG_DWORD 0X00000001 (1)
NoDriveAu... REG_BINARY ff ff ff 03
NoDrives REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
NoDriveTy... REG_DWORD 0x00000091 (145)
No StartMe... REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
NoViewOn REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

I'm going to back up this "policies" pane of my Registry. Then I'll
double-click on "No Close" and set the value to "0".

THANKS VERY MUCH to responders and to writers of articles. I really
appreciate the quality of caring and of the replies.
