START | TURN OFF COMPUTER | TURN OFF is failing

Windows XP Windows version 5.1 SP2

A few weeks ago my PC refused to shutdown from the START | TURN OFF COMPUTER
| TURN OFF. It won't restart either from the same path but selecting
RESTART. All it does is give a little tiny blink on the screen and then
just continues as if nothing had happened.

In reading some of the other posts I see that starting in SAFE MODE is my
next likely step. Can you give me some advice as to what I should be
looking for?

I've looked at the Event Log and see this message when I tried to power off
and there are other errors and warnings.

The attempt to power off [computer id] failed
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp

I'm really struggling. Nothing really came up at that site because my
computer id number was in the message. But taking that out returned a
series of unrelated links. I'm not quite sure where to go from here.

Please give me some advice. I don't expect anyone to solve the problem for
me. But if you could point me in some direction I'd sure appreciate it. I
hate to take it to the shop. The last time they had it for 2 weeks. It's a
real computer shop, not the Geek Squad or anything like that. But if I
could solve this myself I'd really like to do that.

I thank you in advance for any assistance / advice / direction you can give
me.

Usually its a hardware conflict, however those symptoms are usually pc fails
to power-off (although its just ready to do so),then it restarts
itself..Also,you
might look in the "power options" folder in control-panel,edit to default
settings.

You should be looking for an infestation of some sort to start with. Start
in safe mode and run full scans with an up to date anti virus program and a
malware program such as: Anti-Malware 1.33, which can be downloaded from
here:

http://www.download.com/Malwarebyte...l-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=10997763

Continue running scans until nothing is found by the programs. If this
doesn't cure the shutdown problem, then use the technique in this article:

Andrew and Ron,

I thank you both for your suggestions. I will certainly try both of them
this weekend and let you know the results.

Ron, thank you also for telling me what to expect. I didn't really know
what I supposed to do in Safe Mode. Now I do.

I do have current up-to-date Corporate Norton Anti-Virus installed. My
company realizes that we do connect to our company servers from home and so
they provide the Corporate software to us so that we don't accidently pass
something along. It runs a full scan weekly and a short scan daily.

Also Spyware Detector runs daily as well.

Thanks so very much!! I'll repost to let you know what happens.

Andrew and Ron,

It's been a bumpy ride since you sent me your suggestions. I printed out
the instructions regarding "How to perform advanced clean-boot
troubleshooting in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316434"

Unfortunately there were over 200 digitally unsigned drivers but I put them
in a directory as it said to do. But then I started getting messages that
..sys files were missing. I restored a couple of them but then it said that
Ntfs.sys (I think) was missing and nothing I did got me past that.

So I took my PC back to the store that built it and they had to reinstall
Windows. After its return I've been busy reinstalling all the stuff that
was lost. For the most part the keys were in a .txt file but there were a
couple that were out of date.

Mostly things are going all right. My Nero Back-It-Up full backup file is
not recognized by the version I reinstalled. Even though I was able to
download the updates that I had done a couple of years ago.

So. I probably misrepresented myself as someone who knew what they were
doing! And should have posted at the "newbies" XP site! LOL

All part of the adventure.
