TS Licensing Win2K Server

Steve Babcock

I have a W2K server and I want to run Terminal Services.

The 20 remote systems that I want to access TS are all WinXP Pro PCs.

1. Do I need any W2K client CALs for these PCs ?

2. Do I need TS CALs or are they part of the standard Win2K CALs ?

No, your licensing is fine. Microsoft lets you use the
existing CAL's from the XP (and 2000) OS's on a W2K
Terminal Server. Anything below those two OS's and it
would require a ts license. Just remember, when you
decide to upgrade to 2003 server in the futire you will
have to buy all new licenses no matter what the client OS
is.

I'm sorry, but the previous answer is all wrong.
Here's how it should be:

1. Yes. Every client needs a CAL to connect to a W2K server (with or
without TS). This is for basic print, file, etc connections.
2. Yes and No. Every client needs a TS CAL, but a W2K Pro or XP Pro client
get a free TS CAL from the TS LIcensing server, as soon as you have that
installed and activated. So you do not have to *buy* a TS CAL for these
clients (but must install the LS).

About upgrading to 2003 and having to buy new TS CALs: if you owned your XP
Pro desktops before 24 April 2003, you can get a free 2003 TS CAL through
the TS transition plan.

That's about it. You have 90 days to do this after you install
Terminal Services (but I wouldn't wait until day 89:). Don't
forget that the TS Licensing Service must be installed on a Domain
Controller.
