Trying to return windowsXP to normal

My computer has been slowing down. I have removed Norton Internet and
Systemworks software. While performing initial restart time testing by
adjusting MSCONFIG; in normal, selective, and original boot configuration; I
have lost the ability for a normal startup. When I restart the computer in
normal startup mode; the task bar indicates a beige color and certain
services are not available i.e. device manager and computer does not
recognize printer.

I have tried to repair XP through Microsoft downloads (updates,) since my
restore history was wiped out when Norton Ghost was removed, with no
success.

How can I get my computer back to normal and access my services?
