Cannot run in safe mode

Hi:
Background story:
Previously my computer was virused, so it couldn't update virus definitions
for Norton. I tried F8 for safe mode and the computer was always freezed. I
abandoned the F8 method, and followed the norton suggestions, I reinstalled
my norton 2003, and everything ran "normal."

HOWEVER
After the computer "looked normal," 2 two weeks later, for curiosity, I ran
"misconfig" and I choose to run in safe mode, then after that, my computer,
just as previously happened when I tried F8, could not be opened in safe
mode. Worse than that is that since I had chosen to run safe mode in
msconfig, everytime when I restarted it, the computer only ran into safe
mode, which it will never start the computer. My computer could not run into
neither safe mode nor normal mode since than, and the screen is always
black/no-display!
I have some important data in the computer for my school, please help!

I can't shut down my computer using the shut down screen. When you click on
Start, you get another small screen with Standby, Shut Down, Sign off. It is
gone. Sometimes I see it flash up, then gone in an instent. How can I
restore this shut down screen to turn off my computer?

Dear Linda:

I am posting a question for help. I am not a helper. I am waiting a kind
help too. I guess that you probably tried to post questions under similar
title. However, I think that might confuse helpers because they thought my
question was responded by you. This might result in both of or questions will
be ignored by helpers since they might assume our questions were responded.
