This is directed to those that have been kind enough to help me in my
recent problems with Thunderbird:.

Last week, I absolutely removed every vestige of TBird in my hard drive.
I have rebooted several times since then.

As a final attempt today, I loaded the Portable Thunderbird,
theoretically a simpler version, no install.

As soon as I ran TB, it wants to dialup- a NoNo in my book, usually.

I subscribed to newsgroups for the umpteenth time.As soon as I looked on
ACF at my post, immediately AT THE FIRST RUN, I see again the double
entry, like before.

Now TB was not in my registry to start with, it was not running in the
background to start with, it had no history on the hard drive as the
profiles were long gone.

So I said goodbye to Thunderbird, after many good Netscape/TB years, it's
not for me.

For you folks where TB is running fine, all I can say is been there, done
that.

Hi Mike, sorry to hear Tbird hasn't worked out for you. When I run Tbird
I use an earlier version and haven't struck the grief that you have.

I tend to use other standalone clients for news though. Xnews, Pan and
MT-NewsWatcher being my usual clients. Xnews is the best IMO.

I suggest you re-install your Window$. It's really sick... :)

Thanks, Mike.

Pan is for Gnome, MT Newswatcher is for Mac. ??

I tried Mesnews, mentioned earlier, there is no obvious way to send a
message, a major flaw.

Any program should make the basic functions very obvious. That was the
story with 40tude Dialog. I didn't like Pimmy. Xananews seemed usable,
but I like Xnews better, where I like the GUI.

I need to try Free Agent.

It just seems strange, after so long, to be thrashing around for a
newsreader. In computing, the dust never settles.

Don't bother with Free Agent. There are so many features unavailable
in the free version that it is almost unusable.

Pan can be used in Windows.

MesNews is a mess.

Dialog is okay, but too complicated to set up and customize.

Xnews is very popular, but it is completely unintuitive to me and I can
not customize it to my taste. It is very fast though.

For the way I use Usenet, Xananews suits me the best. Remember, if you
decide to try it out again I can help you set it up and learn its
powerful features. Just e-mail me.

Thanks for the review comments, and if I get back to Xananews, will
contact you. It is nice, emphasizes some stuff I don't need.

I didn't like in Dialog that some basic function are not obvious, and
that's a necessity.

I guess I have to go through Free Agent to find out.

For a news reader, you should try Microplanet Gravity. I have it on my
system and its interface can be tweaked around until it's almost the
same as TB. And it has more features than TB, when all is said and done:

http://mpgravity.sourceforge.net/

It allows for better filtering than TB. You could leave TB installed if
it's working for mail, and remove any news accounts. Then use MPG for news.

Xnews is looking better, based upon that.

Xnews is the better client IMO as it has stronger PCRE support. But I do
use both, am using Pan on Mac OS X right now.

I use Pan when I'm on a computer that hasn't got an easy way to run Xnews
and I find I can run Pan on more platforms than I can Xnews.

Setting up GTK on Windows is a no brainer, Mike so don't let that deter
you. GTK is also required by a couple of other *nix ports to Windows, such
as Gimp and Inkscape if you ever use these.

John, thanks for reminding me about Gravity, haven't used it for years.
I downloaded the executable, there are lots of help files to plow
through.

I am responding in Gravity, my first post.

It starts off strange. I selected Followup, the normal screen opened to
compose a message, I respond at the bottom of the post, but your post
I'm replying to is completely missing the text of your message.

Comment?

I notice to copy a message, I rightclick Edit/Copy, a little different.

I forgot to add, so replying again to my own message, notice again the
missing text.

The opening default is all threads expanded, is there a setting to close
threads, open by selection?

View Menu -> Global Options -> Display tab. Check the option "Threads
Begin Collapsed" on the right side.

Mike, what was the problem with T-Bird? A couple of years ago (or when
it first came out) I tried it and it was ok for a few weeks then
developed problems. I then went back to OE - but the UPdates kept
messing things up to the point I, last week went back to check out
T-Bird. This version is working like a charm here. I can only hope it
continues to do so. I like how this version looks. For NGS it has a
colored line that makes following the different posters' comments easier
to read and keep track of who said what. What OS are you using? When
did you try T-Bird? What were you using before? I've heard about the
others, but I grow weary of having to learn yet another bunch of point
and clicks just to do simple things, only to have it fowl up shortly
thereafter. I'll stay with whichever one works, and right now that's
T-Bird (IE 7 or whatever) was a GIGANTIC NO-GO here. Best of luck at
whichever one you get to work.

View, Global Options, Replying, Follow Up/Reply. Make sure that
checkmarks are by "Paste original article into reply" and "Paste
original into followup".

The above option should probably be default.

Thanks to you and John for the help. I just want a running start before
having to plow through many help files to get an understanding.

I was set to start with Free Agent but the comments slowed me down.
