Test page will not print error windows xp pro

Chris L.

I have a windows xp pro laptop trying to connect to an HP laserjet 5
networked printer. It allows me to add the printer just fine but when I try
to print a test page it errors instantly with Unable to print test page.
Would you like to oopen the print troubleshooter to solve this problem?
Unable to complete process. I am able to connect any other computer to this
printer and print just fine. I have removed the drivers, reinstallled the
drivers, stopped and restarted the print spooler and even removed the
reference in the registry to this printer. I try to print from any other
application and I do not get an error it just seems to go through fine but
nothing prints. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did this used to work? If so, what changed? In particular, have you
installed or uninstalled any other hp printers?

Is the printer connected to another printer and shared or is it
networked in some other fashion?

Depending on how you removed the drivers, you may not have removed them
completely and thus ended up reinstalling corrupted files. See

HP used to make good printers. Perhaps their hardware is still good
(personally, I think it is), but the software bundled with the printers
is terrible.

For me, the problems were with Deskjet printers rather than my hp
laserjet, but just in case, look in
%WINDIR%system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3 for files named HPBOID.exe and
HPBPRO.exe. Are they there? In my experience, when HPBOID.exe is
deleted, the "test page" button gives the exact behavior you describe,
although printing from other apps works.

Are you using the drivers that ship with XP? What is the driver name you
are using?

What print processor is used for this printer on the machine sharing the
printer? This data is available on the Advanced tab of the printer's
properties.

Alan and Lem thank you for your responses. I will check on these things and
then repost. As far as removing the drivers I removed the printer first,
clicked on file; server properties and then removed the drivers from the
drivers tab. Then I renamed the folder under spool, drivers, to old and let
it recreate when I reinstalled the printer. This printer was taken out of
commission because it was no longer needed until now but everyone else that
connects to it prints fine.
