Test page failed to print

I have a user with a new dell PC. I set it up (updates, patches, etc.) at
the same time as about 6 other machine, 2 of which went to this users' office.

She is trying to print to a networked HP LJ1320. Others in her office print
to it just fine. Some of the others are pc's from that same batch as hers.
Their setup on the network and adding a printer went without issue. When you
add this printer to her machine, it adds just fine, and appears to be normal.
But when you try to print a test page, we get the 'test page failed to
print' message immediately, like no delay from the time you push the button.

I haven't seen any type of driver or installation program on HP's website
that would allow me to install the drivers directly on her PC. This location
uses workgroups instead of servers. She is joined to the correct workgroup.
Her windows firewall is disabled. This printer just has an ethernet cable
installed in the back, it's not connected to any other machine directly.

This is at a remote site, so I'm not 'hands-on', I am trying to solve it
over the phone. Thanks for any help.

Can they "ping" the printer IP?

I do not know why your printer won't work but I strongly
recommend that you install one of the several remote support
tools that are now available. Trying to resolving this type of
problem by telephone rarely works, wastes a lot of time and
is extremely frustrating for the end user. He/she has a job to
do, not attempt to carry out a bunch of largely meaningless
instructions.

I don't know, I'll have to download a manual for the printer and determine
how to find out it's ip address. When I looked on another pc there that
prints to this same printer, the port shows up as 'HP LASERJET PORT" (or
something similar) and no ip address shown.

I really think it's something specific to her machine, not a networking
issue. She can see other PC's on her workgroup and access the internet.
Plus the speed at which this error message pops up tells me that it's not
hitting the printer.

Strongly endorse others suggestion that you (arrange to) install remote support. Should be easy to convince your leader that a small investment in time and/or cash will make you more productive and users "happy(er)".
