What is the defference between opening a template and opening a document
based on a template?

A template is intended to be a starting point for a document. You want to
create a document based on a template using File > New. That document will
then have all text in the template, any formatting from the template, and
access to any macros or AutoText in the template. You would open the
template, itself, when you want to change the pattern for future documents.

For more on the different kinds of templates and locations of templates
folders see http://addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm.
