Hi

That error message would suggest that one or more of the System Restore
files have become corrupt. You can try turning SR off/on, although you will
lose all existing checkpoints:

Right click on My Computer and select Properties>System Restore. Enable
'Turn off System Restore on all drives' - then reboot your PC. Go back into
SR and disable 'Turn off...' and then reboot again. After the second reboot
you should have one new checkpoint and SR should work properly after that.

This will probably fix the restore problem, but note that you won't actually
be able to do a restore afterwards in order to fix whatever other problem
you've got.
Mind you - you can't anyway at the moment so you'll be no worse off. !!

I've seen this problem twice recently and it was actually part of a much
bigger problem - some sort of virus I guess. On both occasions the hard
drive was also showing 100% full although actually had loads of space on it.
I could only fix it with a drive-wipe and a full re-install

Is there a way to restore it to factory settings. Like how old
computers have a system recovery disk?

Many new computers come with recovery disks too.

OEM vendors are required by their agreement with Microsoft to give you a
means of reinstalling, should it be necessary. They can do this in one of
three ways:

1. An OEM copy of Windows
2. A restore or recovery CD
3. A hidden partition on your drive, with restore information.

If you don't have 1 or 2, you should have 3, but you should contact your
vendor to find out.

Personally, I find both 2 and 3 unacceptable (especially 3; a hard drive
crash can leave you with nothing), and would never choose to buy a computer
that came with an operating system unless I got a complete generic
installation CD for that operating system.

What exactly is the problem. It's quite possible that it can be
solved WITHOUT doing a full reinstall. There are some very smart
people here. I'm not one of them, but they're out there :)
