We can't access system restore. Someone who debugged our desktop says it
won't work on the version of XP he installed. Can someone help with this.

I have no idea what you mean by "someone who debugged our desktop,"
but let me point out that System Restore works in all "versions" of XP
(XP doesn't have "versions"; by "versions," I assume you mean Service
Pack levels).

You've provided no information about what "we can't access system
restore" means, and what happens when you try. Please tell us exactly
how you tried and exactly what happens, including the exact verbatim
text of any error messages you receive.

Also note that the web site with the best information on System
Restore is http://bertk.mvps.org/

A local computer service installed a new hard drive and says, "The copy of
windows we use is a corporate version and system restore is not included."

When we go to My Computer, System Properties, we get a window showing SR is
turned off. When we uncheck that box we get an error message saying, "System
restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives.
Please restart your machine and try again," which we have done.

When we go to all programs to access Sytem Tools and SR we get the same boxes.

As Ken says, SR in on all versions of XP.

A corporate version would be a Volume Licence of XP Professional, which
includes SR.

I'd go straight back to them, and ask where they got their Volume Licence
from!
I'm very curious.

Did the give you a reinstall disk?

Five points:

1. There is no such thing as a "corporate" version.

2. The term "corporate version" is used for pirated version.

3. All official copies of Windows XP come with System Restore.

4. Since you apparently have a pirated version installed, it can
differ from an official version in all the ways the pirate wanted to
have it differ and was able to make it different.

5. Your "local computer service" is obviously a pirate, and the
company has cheated you. If I were in your shoes, I would tell them
that if they don't give you a legitimate official version of Windows,
I would report them to the authorities.

Under Properties in My Computer I see the following:
Windows XP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
Registered to eXperience
76487-640-8365391-2337

So, is this legit?

I have another question about my laptop. (which he didn't "fix").
The icon says there are downloads ready to be installed. I think it is for
Service Pack 2. But when I try to install it it won't complete the
installation.

I can't tell you from that. But note two things, repeating what I said
below:

1. if you were told it was a corporate version, it's almost certainly
*not* legit.

2. As I said earlier, all versions of XP come with System Restore. If
yours doesn't, there's something wrong with it, and that also very
strongly suggests that it's not legit.

It validated as genuine. I am somewhat relieved. But still can't run System
Restore
