Problem with System Restore

I played with a new program (Pluck) that somehow screwed up
the font/size of the various options that are listed in the
box you get when you right click a program, and in general
the text in any Windows box that opens up. I don't mean the
title text in the banner of the box, but the actual text
that is written in the body.

I am no longer involved with Pluck except for two cookies
that it left.

I haven't been able to restore the former text size, so I
tried restoring the system to an earlier date. But
regardless how far I go back in the date, the restore will
not work. I get the following msg:
Restoration incomplete. System cannot be restored to date selected.
No changes have been made.
Choose another date and restart restore.

I used every date back to three weeks as a target date, but
none would restore.

Could the two cookies that Pluck left be causing this?
There are also two Pluck temp internet files that have
'cookie' mention in them.

I can control the font and size of any text that I am
entering in a box, but where is the control for the text
that Windows is entering in the box?

Have you tried turning System Restore off, and back on again?

To do this; go to :

"Control Panel" > "System Properties" > "System Restore" (tab)

....and checkmark the box named :

"Turn off System Restore on all drives"

....press the [ok] button to save your preferences and exit.

Then go back into : "System Properties" > "System Restore" (tab)

and un-checkmark the same box to re-enable System Restore again.

Doing this will also erase all previous restore-points, but I think it may
also cure System Restore from displaying the irregular text size...

P.S. I also recommend you try out EruNT (that is; "Emergency Recovery
Utility for NT") - a 3rd-party update on the old ERU utility for Windows'95
which used to save the Windows registry-files.

But in NT-based Windows versions, it's not so simple to make backups of the
registry, and you cannot backup the registry by simply copying some files.

So this 3rd-party freeware utility was developed by Lars Hederer, and can
be setup to run automatically at every boot to save a copy of the
Windows-NT registry files.

I would not use EruNT as a replacement for System Restore, but have this in
addition to it as an extra layer of protection against problems with system
settings saved in the registry.

System Restore only ever restores the "Machine" areas of the registry, and
a EruNT restore covers the entire registry including the current user area.

Using the EruNT application can teach you a great deal about the way all of
the NT-based Windows versions store the registry, and the different methods
of backing-up / restoring available to you.

Thanks, Tim. My restore is now working again. Might you
know where to go in XP sp3 media center edition to select
fonts and type sizes? My sounds/alerts got changed too, but
I think I remember how to select those.

To change system fonts & font sizes - go to :

"Control Panel" > "Display"

(or right-click on an empty area of the desktop and select "Properties")

In the "Display Properties" control panel, click on the "Appearance" tab
and change the lowest box marked "Font Size", to "Large" or "Extra Large".
You will see a "preview" of your changes in the pane above. Click [ok] to
save and exit.

Alternatively, in the "Display Properties" control panel, click on the
"Appearance" tab, then on the "Advanced" button to edit.

You will need to change the font-size in the following items ;

"Menu"
"Selected Items"
"Tool Tip"
"Message Box"

....to make font sizes in Windows appear the same throughout.

To change the System Sounds & Alerts, go to :

"Control Panel" > "Sounds and Audio Devices"

....then click on the "Sounds" tab :- Select individual events in the lower
pane and change the sound that will be played for each by clicking on the
"drop-box" or by pressing the "Browse" button and browsing for one. After
you have finished, press on the [ok] button to save and exit the Sounds
control panel.

Thanks, Tim. You have got my computer back to where I
recognize it. That Pluck program didn't warn me it was
going to change settings, or if it did warn me, I missed it.

I had named the set of sounds I had, so all I had to do was
select that list and everything came back.
