I have been working on this for weeks. HP support gave
up. I get error messages in event viewer on start up and
when it freezes, saying ACPI bios is trying to write to a
protected range. Assuming there is not a design problem
does anyone have an idea where to look.

Hi Rick,

Is this what you are seeing?

ACPI BIOS Attempts to Write to Illegal IO Port Address [Q283649]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283649

If so, you may need a BIOS update, but it's not critical.

I had the problem myself. Your BIOS needs to be updated
(flashed). You will find info. on how this is done at
your motherboard manufactureres website. Didn't work for
me though, the Bios just started writing to a different
illegal range. I ended up replacing the mother board and
that solved the problem.

Good Luck !
