What are the possible causes of my system freezing up. I
am running windows 2000 Pro. The system freezes have been
happening mor and more frequently. Thanks

I can think of several possible causes off the top of my head. The Hard
Drive could be dying or the processor could be overheating. It could also
be possible that the memory is failing or power supply could be going bad.
I find that the best way to determine would be to swap out parts. Replace
them one at a time, starting with the easiest to replace. That is, if you
have the resources to do that. You may also want to run a virus scan and an
adware program to see if that would help before replacing any hardware.

Hi,

System freeze can have multiple causes:

- High cpu usage by a service or a process
- memory leak
- hardware faillure

There are countless causes for this. Here are some steps to combat the most
common.....

** Viruses: Scan for viruses using the latest available definition file for
your antivirus software (or use one of the online tools)

** Sypware/Adware: Scan for non-virus malware using a program like AdAware
or Spybot

** System File Corruption: Run the System File Checker (start > run > sfc
/scannow)

** Outdate/Corrupt drivers: Update all drivers possible (this includes
drivers installed by antivirus and backup software)

** Faulty drivers: Update all drivers possible. Removing non-essential
devices and drivers for troubleshooting purposes can also be considered

I hope that some of this helps. There is not much else you can try, except
for repairing or reinstalling your OS, or debugging a memory dump.
