subwebs are the goal

I have an established website. (Five years in the making)
Publishing has become slow and erratic.
I have been advised that I have too many pages and that dividing them
up into subwebs will solve the problem.
Unfortunately, I never created any folders. I just kept adding new
pages.
I have many topics that just keep growing more new pages.
Can I just drag - I shall call it a master page of a topic -- into a
new folder?
Will the pages under the "master page" follow?
Will I lose the links in these pages?

Thank you very much, Pinto

Not sure what you mean by a "master page of a topic"...but if you are
working with your website opened in FP and you move stuff around FP will
automatically update most links (you'll see a warning) but to be on the safe
side it doesn't hurt to Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks. YOu should do some
clean-up and reorganizing before you create subwebs/sites or you may/will
have a mess on your hands.

You need to create individual folder for each topic and then drag the associated pages and images,
etc. into the specific folder, then right click on the folder and convert to subweb / subsite.

And, as you will discover, each subweb you make needs to be opened
separately in FP when you want to work on it.
