Strange Windows Explorer Behavior

G

gabriel

The problem is, if I double click on a document in a folder in Windows
Explorer (not Internet Explorer) the folder STAYS IN FRONT of the opened
document (I can see the opened document behind the folder).I have to
click on the document to bring it in front in order to use it.

If I open a document by right clicking it with the mouse and select OPEN
(which is the default option) the document opens in FRONT of the Windows
Explorer folder as it should be.

Perhaps not a big thing, but rather annoying.

I have searched Google for answers but to no avail.

my configuration is as follows:
Windows XP Pro SP3

If anyone could help me with sugestions as how to solve this problem, I
would be most grateful.

This might have an effect, maybe even a positive effect! There's an
"Undo" link in case you don't like the results..

Ah, I just noticed that it works properly if you click "Open" from the
context menu. That suggests this fix:

Search opens when double clicking a folder. See Line #18
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/searchwindow.htm

You want to reset the default action by a double-click. The mentioned
"Search opens" problem is also fixed by these.

thanks Elmo,
I already had the setting "Prevent Application from stealing focus"
changed by Powertoys TweakUI but to no avail.
the setting works if you OPEN a folder or Drive but not if you open a
document in a folder.

thanks for the answer but this didn't work for me: If I open a doucument
in a folder the problem in NOT that a searchwindow appears, the correct
document opens but in the BACKGROUND. The folder stays in FRONT of the
opened document.

Right, that article was for a folder associations fix. What type
documents open behind the Explorer window; are they always the same
extension or two?

What other programs might be causing this? Do you have other "Desktop
enhancers" running? If so, disable them as a test.
