Problem with open/save as dialogs

Hello,

I use Windows XP SP 3.

In some applications, not all, open and save as dialogs behave annoying.
One app is Notepad. When I click on open, the open dialog starts in the
directory "My Documents", not the last used folder. That I can live with.

The annoying is that when I shall navigate backwards, no matter if I use
the back key, click on "look in" or click on "up one level", it jumps to
"My recent documents".

Those applications with this behavior seem to have in common that they
don't remember last used folder but always start in "My documents"

Help would be appreciated since all this unnecessary navigation in
dialogs is irritating.

Correction: The path to "My Documents" is:
C:\Documents and Settings\Fred\My Documents

If the open dialog starts in "My Documents" or a sub folder, e g ...\My
Documents\Temp\, and I click on the arrow at the right of the "look in"
address bar, it jumps to "My recent Documents" folder. If I use the back
key, it jumps to the desktop.

The desired behavior would be that the pulldown list appear, when I
click on the arrow, so I could navigate to "Fred" or "Documents and
Settings" or whatever. And when I use the back key I should go to "Fred"
and then "Documents and settings"

But when the open (or save as) dialog starts in a directory that is not
a subfolder to "My Documents" it works as expected, even Notetpad.

So this annoying behavior only occurs in "My Documents" and its subfolders.

As a workaround, I have created a shortcut to the folder "Fred" in the
folder "My recent documents"
