Delay in showing the Save As dialog box

Hi. I'm having a wierd problem that started about a month ago. Any time I
try to save a document and click File -> Save As, it takes about 3 minutes
for the dialog box to come up the first time. Subsequent attempts to open
the Save As dialog box result in immediate responses. That is until the
application is closed and restarted at which time the entire process starts
again. This happens in various applications.

It is almost as if it is caching the directory contents. Also the drive
keeps clicking away during this time until the dialog bos is brought up.
Could the drive be malfunctioning? I will try a scan disk and see what
happens. Any help is appreciated.

Well I figured out the solution my self and it's back to normal. Just so
that it may be helpful to someone else, I'll post what I did to resolve the
issue.

One thing I didn't mention in my earlier post was that the icon for the
Desktop on the dialog boxes didn't show up correctly. The icons were like
those you would find with unassociated file extensions.

Anyway, on a hunch I ran the system file checker utility (sfc /scannow). It
did the trick. Now the dialog boxes open instantly and the desktop icon is
back to normal.
