My Documents Folder missing plus sign in Explorer

I'm running XP SP2 and sometime after a previous upgrade (probably XP SP2 or
Office) when I open Explorer, the My Documents folder in the left pane is
missing the "+" sign. As soon as I open a folder withing My Documents, the
"+" sign re-appears. Does anyone know how to get the "+" sign to show when
Explorer is first opened?

Try pressing F5.

Pressing F5 does nothing. Refreshing the window does nothing. The only
thing that brings back the "+" sign is opening a folder within My Documents
-- from that point on, the "+" sign remains until you close the Explorer
window, even if you return to the "My Documents" level. Opening a new
Explorer window, opens without the "+" sign on the My Documents folder in the
left pane. This is probably a problem caused by some change to the registry.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

A double-click of the My Documents folder opens it in the left pane; the
default (highlighted) action is set to "Expand", or "Collapse" once
opened. That suggests that the Directory, or Folder associations could
be damaged, since those options are usually defined there. Try the
Folder and Directory associations fixes listed at the following site,
although since other folders have the plus sign, I doubt this special
folder will be defined by those associations:

Fix File Associations.

Also try these. Click Start, Run, type:

regsvr32 SHMEDIA.DLL (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 ole32.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll (Press Enter key)

You could also try a Google search on "no plus sign" "My Documents"..
maybe it's been solved before.
