stopping dvd/cd from auto-run after 'double-click'

dear all,

wxp pro sp2,

on another machine that i have, when i double-click my dvd/cd drive, it
opens it up into explorer i.e. like right-click -> open or explore but on
another machine double-clicking behaviour seems to depend on what's inside
the dvd/cd drive. is there a way to:

1. permanently disable auto-run on dvd/cd drive (and btw, on how to reverse
such an action),

2. 'open' dvd/cd drive on double-clicking rather than runs it?

You can use Microsoft's TweakUI for XP to disable autoplay:

CDs/DVDs can specify what the default action is (which is activated
when you double-click). Turning off autoplay won't change that.
Right-click on the CD/DVD and always choose the action you want; the
highlighted one is the default.

.. which one of the powetoy i should get for this purpose?

.. i prefer to avoid installing another software if possible, so, is there
keyboards short-cuts to what i wanted to do or if not, is there some kind of
registry change that i can do?

The TweakUI download (scroll down the page). However - if you are
really against installing anything, you can manually change the
AutoPlay for each drive. Check out this article's first question:

thank you Dan. your link is super and does the job. never knew xp can be
controlled at such a detail level.
