Zombie CD/DVD drives

Vern

I tried to install a second CD/DVD drive on my E Machines desktop running XP
Home, SP2 but while both drives show in Windows Explorer and on My Computer,
neither one will read a CD or DVD.

I've swapped out the cable with 2 others - no luck. Tried another DVD drive
- still no luck. Swapped Master and Slave settings - no luck. Disconnected
the new drive and the original drive still won't work. The both light up on
boot up, but won't read.

Any suggestions?

CD repair for XP:

Also try the following. You should back up the registry before making
changes:

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

You can't have two cd drives on the same cable they are conflicting with each
other.
Try this one step at a time, remove both drives, pick one drive to install,
ensure you are connecting the cable to the proper place on the Mother board,
some of them even mark the port on the Motherboard as cd drive, and have the
cable correctly oriented, some cables are able to plug in backwards yours
should match the plug in, ie a small notch matches to a small nib on the
cable. ensure your cable is installed correctly on the crive, ie not missing
any pins. connect power and try it, if the pc powers up and the drive spins
up at the proper time, it should be ok, you do know you have to have special
software to read DVD's xp doesn't have this built in, like Vista. if both
drives (ie if you have installed them both) light up at the same time while
booting, you have a conflict, only one should light up at a time. primary
then secondary.

Bowl sheet. I've got a DVD burner and CD burner on the same cable.

Yeah, I've got a DVD ROM and CD burner on the same cable, and they both work
fine.

Any way you can try to drive(s) in another machine? Have you tried one
drive at a time with new cables? I had a fluke recently and ended up with
*three* bad cables, then found a fourth one (very old) that's working fine.

Also--shot in the dark--are you certain your PS can support another drive?
Just because it has the plug doesn't mean it can run one more thing.
Depending on the E Machine, they tend to be underpowered.

Don't take it personal. The responder (not me) was reacting to your
statement of "fact". Your statement was made with such a straightforward air
of authoritative knowledge so as to beg for an onslaught of reaction from
more technically inclined readers & lead some poor less informed person on a
wild goose chase. You may as well stated that swapping the mounting screws
on the drives will solve his problem. Seriously, though, where did you come
up with that theory? Did you simply misunderstand the question & reply with
an answer that addresses other issues?

I learned a long time ago, nobody is perfect we all have bad days.
I have launched into others at times, doesn't suprise me to get launched
into from time to time, it's a free world with lots of personal opinions.

Haven't you ever wondered why there are 3 connectors on an IDE Cable?
Could it possibly be a connector for the Motherboard, and 2(TWO) CD or DVD
Drives???????

And what do I think of you; you are a raving IDIOT!
