How to change the default action for drives?

M

Michael Moser

For some strange reason the default action (i.e. when I double-click on)
for a drive is to copy that disk (I guess some CD burner program -
WinOnCD?) has registered this as default action.

I find this quite annoying - I rather would prefer to "open" or "browse"
(i.e. same as "explore" - but without the tree view at the left) the CD
or DVD by default. Where/how can I change this setting? CD/DVD-drives
don't seem to be listed under (Explorer) => Tools => Folder Options =>
File Types.

Try this.

Type or paste in Start | Run and click OK...

regsvr32 /i shell32

Open
Explore
Search

Should be the order in the right click context menu for drives. The default
command for the file is shown in bold on the shortcut menu for the file.
Its also the first item on the list.
----

As far as Explore being the default on folders...

If you do not use any of the Common Tasks, disable the Common Tasks pane in
folders.

Enable or disable Common Tasks pane in folders
http://www.winxptutor.com/commontasks.htm

Or if you would still like to be able to toggle from Folder Pane to Common
Tasks Pane...

Set Explore as default for (NONE) Folder in Folder Options.

Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
File Types tab | Scroll down to and Select: (NONE) Folder |
Advanced button | Highlight: explore | Set Default | Click OK |
Click Apply | Click OK

Set Default
[[Sets the selected command as the command to be carried out when the file
is invoked.
The default command for the file is shown in bold on the shortcut menu for
the file.]]

This may change some other things that you may not like.

Remember what you did so you can change the default back to Open.
===

How folders open depends on a number of things.

Depends on the combination of...

Show common tasks in folders
[[Specifies that hyperlinks to common folder tasks and other places on your
computer are displayed in folders. These links appear in the left pane of
the folder window.]]

Use Windows classic folders
[[Specifies that folder contents are displayed like classic Windows folders,
which means that folder contents do not look and work like Web pages.]]

Open each folder in the same window
[[Specifies that the contents of each folder open in the same window. To
switch back to the previous folder, click the Back button on the toolbar, or
press BACKSPACE.]]

Open each folder in its own window
[[Specifies that the contents of each folder open in a new window. The
previous folder content still appears in a different window, so you can
switch between the windows.]]

Under...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
General tab |

Whether Explore or Open is set as default.

Under...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
File Types tab | Scroll down to and Select: (NONE) Folder |
Advanced button |

This effects how double click or single click handles opening a folder.

Single-click to open an item (point to select)
[[Specifies that you want to open items in folders and on the desktop by
single-clicking them, just as you would click a link on a Web page. To
select an item without opening it, rest your pointer on it.]]

Double-click to open an item (single-click to select)
[[Specifies that you want to single-click an item to select it and
double-click an item to open it.]]

Open and Explore are different.

Explore opens folders with Folders pane on the left.
Open opens folders with common tasks showing on the left.

Again that depends on all the settings above.

Ooops. First: Thanks for all these hints and detailed explanation, but
reading those I realized that my description must have led you to
believe, that ALL my drives have "Copy..." as their default options.
That's not the case. It's only my CD/DVD drives (I have two). Sorry for
describing this wrongly! I only want to change the defaults pertaining
to CD/DVD drives.

Thus - let me rephrase my question more precisely: where do I set/adjust
the operations (and esp. the default operation) for CD/DVD drives?

Try this.

Folder Options...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
File Types tab | (NONE) AudioCD & (NONE) DVD |
Advanced button |

Play is the only item that I have under Actions for both.

If you have Copy listed on either one or both, either highlight Copy and
click the Remove button or highlight Play and click on the Set Default
button.

Set Default button
[[Sets the selected command as the command to be carried out when the file
is invoked.
The default command for the file is shown in bold on the shortcut menu for
the file.]]

**Note: If you do not see the Advanced button...

The Restore button resets the selected extension to the previous file type
and will only be present if you modified the settings of the selected file
type. The Restore button appears in the place of the Advanced button.

....hit the Restore button instead.

On the Start Menu, click on Help and Support. Enter Autoplay in
the Search box.

You might also want to take a look at this,

How to Change CD/DVD content AutoPlay actions in Windows XP

Finally, look for an Options menu on your CD burning software
and make sure there's no setting to automatically copy a CD
when it's put in the drive.

Good luck

Thanks for the hint! There is indeed some application (still to be
chased down) that keeps changing this default. Probably that's Roxio's
WinOnCD but I still need to confirm this and shoot the app that's doing
this. WinOnCD is anyway an application that behaves as if it were the
only thing I bought my PC for. It installs services and startup apps.
and changes system settings without end. ||-(

Go to the following website. The information there will allow you to determine exactly which program is adding those context menu entries and how to change them.
