stop: OXOOOOOO51 error help

I am getting 0x00000051: REGISTRY_ERROR while starting up
windows XP. I am unable to use "Safe Mode" after restarting.
The problem persists and I have trying to find out what's
wrong. I do not have any new hardware's installed. So I
think this is not a hardware compatibility issue. No new
softwares were installed before the previous shutdown.

Would be great help if someone can suggest a solution that
I can try out.

thanks !

What happens when you F8 at boot up?

I get the advanced options menu. No matter which option I
select from that, the registry error occurs. I cannot get
past the registry error.

Would reinstalling the OS help ? If I reinstall, will that
format my system drive or will it just reinstall the
applications, system files etc? I have important docs in My
Documents and Guest Documents and was wondering if those
will be lost if the OS is reinstalled ?

If yes, is there any other solution that I can try.

Thanks larry, for replying. Any help would be useful.

I have had this problem too, and apparently other are
also facing it, i don't know what caused it. The only
thing i could do was install a new copy of windows, but
if u have an account which ir private then u will not be
able to access it, so u still have to try to boot up from
ur old windws, i'm still trying to work on it, if
anything i do works i'll let u know.
