STOP error then cannot play sound

M

Man T

XP SP2
Recently I got a STOP error:
MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION

And then the pc reboot itself (I guess because too hot?).
Now I cannot play any audio file or video files without sound (eg.
RealPlayer, .VidelLan VLC media player,....etc)
When I tired to play .mp3 files by WinAmp I got:
"Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another
device in configuration. Error code: 88780078"

I searched by Goole, most of the solution looking into the Control Panel,
Sound and Audio section.

However, it does not help because XP does not detect any audio device.

I also tried to install the motherboard driver (the sound card is in-built),
I cannot find any audio driver from motherboard CD. From my memory, the
driver is RealTek something.

Any idea?

Right click on My Computer/Properties/Hardware tab/Device Manager tab
and find your audio card and right click on it and try to update it that
way on the Internet from MS servers.

You're lucky. Most people complain when they cannot hear the sound <G>.

You need to post complete Reports. A copy of the Stop Error report would
be helpful.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

I have a 'yellow' question mark beside the 'Other device'.
ie
Other device -> Multimedia Controller
-> Multimedia Video Controller
All these 3 have 'yellow' question mark.

Right click "Multimedia Controller" and "Multimedia Video Controller" I
got the same details for both of them:
The driver of this device are not installed. (Code 28).

What about Event Viewer Reports?

Code 28
The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28).

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver

Solution button: Reinstall Driver

This code means the device was not installed completely.

To resolve this issue, follow the recommended solution. If that does not
work, try removing the device from Device Manager and using the Add New
Hardware wizard to redetect it. You may need to obtain updated drivers
if the error still occurs.

Have you had any further Stop Errors since the original one. Can you
please post details. You can get details from Event Viewer. We need to
see whether the code matches the error mentioned by windmap or whether
the parameters are different.

Background information on Stop Error message:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms795775.aspx

0x0000009C: MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION
(This is a hardware issue: an unrecoverable hardware error has occurred.
The parameters have different meanings depending on what type of CPU you
have but, while diagnostic, rarely lead to a clear solution. Most
commonly it results from overheating, from failed hardware (RAM, CPU,
hardware bus, power supply, etc.), or from pushing hardware beyond its
capabilities (e.g., overclocking a CPU).

Hi,

Yes I agree with you that the CPU is overheat because my motherboard chip
fan is faulty.
The bottom of the STOP said:
"Beginning dump of physical memory.
Physical memory dump completed."

I built my pc myself,
motherboard: ASUS A8N-E
CPU: AMD Athlon 3200+

If you need a replacement fan, and you live in the United States, you
can purchase a replacement here for $7.50 . They are currently out
of stock, but will probably be receiving some soon.

http://estore.asus.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=231&catid=133

Also, in some cases, if you contacted Asus Support, they
would send a replacement fan (within the warranty period).
That was for the cases where large numbers of prematurely
defective fans were provided with particular Asus motherboards.
You'd provide your motherboard serial number to them over
the phone, and a fan in that case, was sent directly to you. The
first two characters of the serial number, tell the year and
month of manufacture.

http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=389792

http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...board_id=1&model=A8N-E&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

So there are some solutions besides letting the
Northbridge cook.

There are also heatpipe Northbridge coolers, and the
type you select in that case, depends on whether your
video card gets in the way or not. Any time you use
a solution like this, it is your responsibility to
make sure there is room mechanically for it to fit,
and also that any holes, any dimensions are correct
for your situation.

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/6...SLIIFX_Heatpipe_Chipset_Cooler.html?tl=g40c16

If your CPU fan has a little bit of air blowing towards
the Northbridge, and it hits the fins on that Thermalright
heatsink, you may not need to attach a fan to it.
Typically, adding a fan to the Northbridge heatsink,
makes it three times as effective as passive cooling,
which is why a fan failure makes such a difference.

You should replace the defective fan ASAP. Running your computer with it
not working could have danaged your computer. Paul has given you advice
on what to do.
