Steps to Upgrade Member Server to Domain Controller in Windows 2000

Mickee

I am finally upgrading my WinNT PDC to a Win2000 Domain Controller.
Meanwhile, I have couple of Win2000 Servers on our network and I was hoping
to convert at least one of them to a Win2000 Domain Controller. I will
probably get rid of my current WinNT BDC.

First of all, is Upgrading a Win2000 Member Server to Domain Controller
possible? If so, what are the steps involved?

Thanks.

I would recommend Server 2003 over 2000. Depending on what functions you
need, you may have to choose between "flavors" of the server OS -
standard/enterprise/web/termserver/external_connector

We have upgraded an NT4 PDC to a 2003 DC - this did not go well when we tried
it with 2000. We have also done dcpromo on a 2003 member server and made it
into a DC (never tried this with 2000).
We do still have some 2000 member servers, so you can leave them that way. I
assume that yours are already performing some function other than DC, and it
may not be a good idea to have them become a DC as well as that other
function..

There are a number of steps that need to be done correctly when you move from
an NT4 domain to Active Directory, or you will have nothing but grief. For
example, it is very important to get DNS set up correctly. This is a subject
too large for a simple newsgroup message - I suggest you do some reading.
