how do I keep aim and msn messenger from starting up automatically when I turn on my computer without uninstalling them?

I'm not quite sure I understand the question, but what I think you mean is
you want to prevent them from loading on startup without uninstalling.

Messenger can be removed from starting on startup by...

Messenger 4.7 Tools>Options>Preferences. Uncheck 'run windows messenger
when windows starts'

Messenger 6.x Tools>Options>General. Uncheck 'automatically run messenger
when i log on to windows'

I don't use AIM, but I'm sure a similar option can be found under
preferences.

Go to Start > Run > msconfig
startup tab and disable them so they won't run at startup. When you
boot and the msconfig window appears, just check the lower left option
so that window won't appear again.
