Start up problem

When I start my PC, it now frequently fails and freezes at the initial screen
with the message that Windows Explorer has failed, and the following data is
shown in the Event Log:

Source: Application error Category: None Event ID: 1000 Faulting
application explorer.exe version 6.0.2900.2810. faulting module ntdll.dll
version 5.1.2600.2180 fault address 0x0002ae22

immediately followed by

Source: Application Error Category: none Event Id 1001
Fault bucket 127605721

I have tried googling each of the above pieces of information but cannot
find any kind of explanation for this error. Strangely enough, pressing the
Restart button usually results in an ok startup, although I have sometimes
had to Restart twice in succession to achieve this.

Can anyone please help a non-techie to try to get to the bottom of this? I
have not installed or uninstalled any software or hardware recently. I have
an XP SP2 system, fully updated with all changes. Any pointers would be
great5ly appreciated.

It sounds like your power supply is dying. Swap it out for a
known-working one to test.

What happens if you logon as a new user? (create a new account in 'User
Accounts'). Try a Safe Mode boot. Also try a clean boot. (msconfig)
Clean boot = no non-microsoft services at startup, no third party apps at
startup.

Could also be caused by some third-party shell extension. This tool may also
help.
