Multiple fault errors on Win XP Pro

I have a client with several Win XP Pro systems on the 2003 domain. One of
these systems is getting multiple faulting errors, most notibly relating to
spoolsv.exe, explore.exe and iexplore.exe. While error windows continually
pop-up the user is still able to continue working, even printing, however if
you try to open the Services MMC you get an error and it fails to open.

Here are some snipets from the Event Log.

Event id: 1000
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.3156, faulting module
ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2726, fault address 0x000361c1.

Event ID : 1001
Fault bucket 516868226.

Event ID: 1002 Source: WinLogon
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

Event ID: 1000 Source Application Error
Faulting application mmc.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module
ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2726, fault address 0x000361c1.

Event ID: 1000 Source: Application Error
Faulting application spoolsv.exe, version 5.1.2600.2696, faulting module
ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2726, fault address 0x000361c1.

Event ID:1000 Source Application Error
Faulting application drwtsn32.exe, version 5.1.2600.0, faulting module
dbghelp.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x0001295d.

Event ID 1002 Source Application Hang
Hanging application mmc.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, hang module hungapp,
version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Event ID: 1001 Source Application Hang
Fault bucket 126818269.

Event ID: 1000 Source Application Error
Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2726, fault address 0x000361c1.

Virus scans yield nothing, and because IE fails I can't run a TrendMicro
online scan. No other systems are having this issue. Also, there have been
no changes in printers or drivers on this system to my knowledge or anyone
elses.

Does anyone have any advice on this issue? I'm pretty well stumped.

Use System Restore to back to a safe point in time.

Use System Restore to back to a safe point in time.

Is this my only option?
Any idea what would cause this? I've scanned for viruses but found none.
Just curious.

No, I have no idea. My prime suspects are, in this order:
- Virus or malware damage.
- Registry corruption.
- File corruption.

Note that System Restore is reversible and will NOT affect
your data file but then I'm sure that you regularly back up
your important files to an independent medium, unlike many
of the posters here who consider this option only after they
have lost access to their hard disk.

Thankfully, all important data resides on a NAS and not on the local system.
If I had to blow it out it would be OK, I'd just rather not have to deal
with that if I don't have to.

Thanks!

As an update, I tried to run the System Restore but couldn't access it. I
ended up calling Microsoft Support and after about 1/5 hours of diags they
determined the ole.dll was corrupt. I was instructed to download and install
a hotfix which fixed the issues. All is working fine now. I'm not sure what
the root cause was but the errors were due to a corrupt dll, not a virus.
The hot fix was:
http://hotfixv4.microsoft.com/Windows XP/sp3/Fix185875/2600/free/279499_ENU_i386_zip.exe

Can't say that this would work for everyone. This is just an FYI.

I have a user who is receiving some of these errors on their computer.
During my web searching I came across this post and downloaded the file
that was linked in this post to see if that would correct the problem.

However the password posted in this thread no longer works with the
file. Is there anything else I can try to use this file?

Sorry for dragging up an old post. Thanks.
