I found a old mfc42.dll file , it is version 4.21.0.7160 , the one in my
computer is version 6.2.4131.0 and it is located in my
windows\system32\dllcache. Do i delete the file in there now and
copy/paste the old one in its place , or do i just put the old file in
there?
thanks

Larry,

Do not delete the one in the DLL cache.

What you could do is copy the file from DLL Cache into the SYSTEM32 folder & if
needed overwrite the one in the game directory. Always backup the file by
renaming it like so: Mfc42.dll.old for example then it won't need to be
overwritten

Hope you can put up with this old man a little longer. OK , I go to
system32 folder and find mfc42.dll and rename it (.old) , then go to dll
cache and copy the mfc42.dll file and paste it to system32 folder where the
one i just renamed is , right?
You do know that the one in the dll cache is the same version as the one
in the system32 folder. This game is real old i think back in windows 95-98
days. The mfc42.dll i d/l from internet is a older version.
Please explain to me about what you mean by "overwrite the one in game
dicetory". do i have to change something in the game?
thanks

Larry,

Copy the DLL from the DLL Cache to the Program Files\Game folder (whatever the
name is) but rename the MFC42.DLL in that folder first. That way your computer
will be using the same version of the DLL.

You can also try renaming that old file in the game folder & then leaving the
DLL out because it should force the game to use the SYSTEM32 folder version
instead.

I am getting nowhere fast on this dadburn mfc42.dll problem fast , so i
think this will be my last post on it. below is a couple of questions.

! - This game has no mfc42.dll in it . do i put one from my .dll cache in it
anyway?

2 - Shouldnt the game run with the newest version of the mfc42.dll?

3- What version of mcf42.dll should be in my computer , i have Windows XP2
Home XP sp2

4 - Is there a chance that i will mess up something else by changing the
mfc42.dll. version in my computer.

And one more last thing. I have three computers and they all run MW3 (the
game without the mfc42.dll error and they all have xp home sp2 ,this so
called gaming computer is the only one putting out this error.

Thanks much for all your help , i really appreciate it

If you're sure it's the game and not something else calling it, yes. mfc42
should already be on the system; is it? If this is an old game, it might
not work with the newer DLLs.
2 - Shouldnt the game run with the newest version of the mfc42.dll?

Not necessarily. Many variables. Probably, since you say it doesn't come
with the game. What does the paperwork say? Manual?
3- What version of mcf42.dll should be in my computer , i have
Windows XP2 Home XP sp2

Mine is 6.2.4131.0. If you have SP2 & updates you should have the same one.
But, an old game might have problems with it if it's poorly written.
4 - Is there a chance that i will mess up something else by changing
the mfc42.dll. version in my computer.

Unlikely anything could happen that would keep you from getting back in and
replaceing it with the original one.
Run your normal backup first, just in case.
And one more last thing. I have three computers and they all run MW3
(the game without the mfc42.dll error and they all have xp home sp2

Sounds like something too new or specific for the game. Or a bad
install/conflict.
