Standby (S3) Problem - Parallel IDE HDD 'missing' on resume

W

Wade Carpenter

Hello world!

I'm trying to troubleshoot a standby (S3) issue on my PC.

Here's what happens:
1) Start -> Turn Off Computer -> Standby
2) System Enters what appears to be S3 state, i.e. no fans, HDD's spin
down, power LED blinking, monitor off.
3) Wait for a while (I can't be more specific yet. The problem
doesn't occur if I only standby for a short time, ie 5-10 mins).
4) Resume system,
5) System resumes as expected. Within one minute, I get a "Delayed
Write Failed" error, and my D: disappears. As soon as the system
resumes, I can see the drive, but then once the "Delayed Write Failed"
messages appear, the disk goes MIA.
6) Open devmgmt.msc as Administrator and "Scan for hardware changes".
7) D: shows up again!
From what I can tell, the numerous "Delayed Write Failed" errors are
having no permanent impact on the disk, but I can't be sure. I only
use it for storing recorded TV shows from my TV Tuner card, so I'm not
terribly worried if something does get corrupted.

I recently reinstalled WinXP Pro + SP2 (from SP2 CD) + current
'Critical' updates + drivers from Windows Update.
I also installed the latest drivers from ASUS for my motherboard,
P4B533, from a ZIP file (inf5021003.zip) on the ASUS website.

I have tried the suggestions from Q330174:
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330174>
- Disable write caching on the disk
- Set DMA mode to AUTO in BIOS -- Windows shows "Ultra DMA Mode 5",
which is what the BIOS shows as well.
- Set 'SystemPages' value to 0xFFFFFFFF in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Other:
- Verified that 'LargeSystemCache' is set to 0 per suggestions in
forum messages.

Any help would be *greatly* appreciated. I've been trying to figure
this one out for the past week. I basically just change some
settings, standby, come back from work and the check if it's made any
difference, or the same overnight. Shorter tests (~10mins) don't have
the same problem!

I've just finished running the "Long Drive Self Test" from Seagate
"SeaTools for Windows" and it reported no errors . It shows the drive
as B60JZRZH - Maxtor 6B200R0 - Firmware BAH4.

Regards,

Wade Carpenter

Delayed write error(s) usually mean a hd failure (or going to),or the hard
drive controller on the board.

Hi,

Thanks Andrew, but I'm quite certain it's not an HDD problem thanks to
the diagnostic tools I used, e.g. SeaTools. I'm not convinced that
the driver for the controller and or the controller hardware are
behaving correctly, however!

Anyway, as for a solution... When I posted originally, I hadn't fully
tested the 'SystemPages' value change to 0xFFFFFFFF from Q330174.
This seems to be the workaround. I have no idea why, but I'll just
have to take it on faith for now! After an overnight S3, and a 10
hour S3 during the day, it seems to be OK. No messages in the system
log!

It looks like the response from the kernel was to take the device out
of operation.

Sorta makes me wish the kernel was open source so I could figure out
where this is all coming from =)

Wade
