standby mode and hibernation

for some reason my laptop cant go to standby mode or hibernation.i have windows xp so when i click on shut down on the start menu three things usually appear....standby, shut down and restart. now i cant click on standby. the icon is not lighted. can anyone help me.

The Standby button will become available once the correct video
card/adapter drivers are installed. It will appear when you click
Start > Turn Off Computer...

Laptop computers require specialized hardware drivers.
After repairing Windows XP, visit the support website of
the manufacturer of your laptop and download all the Windows
XP drivers designed to work with your specific laptop model,
especially the video adapter drivers.

Then right-click on your Desktop and select:
Properties > Setting and adjust your Screen Resolution
settings, then select "Highest (32 bit) Color Quality setting,
and click "apply".
