Hibernation/Standby Problem

Running WinXP on a laptop.

I have 2 problems:

1) Have it set in power management to go to standby after 1 hour and
hibernate after 4 hours. Goes into standby but when it comes time to
hibernate it hangs AND the fan is on.

2) Choosing Hibernate from shut down mode only work some of the time.
Usually pops me back to the screen.

Would anyone know why this would be happening and how to repair it?
