Weird standby and hibernation problem on Motion Tablet PC

Mark Sztainbok

I recently bought a Motion M1400 Tablet PC and I'm having some problems with
regards to standby and hibernation.

When the tablet is running on battery, I cannot seem to get it to
automatically standby and/or hibernate according to my Power Options
settings. For example, if I standby manually, the tablet stays in standby
even though I have a hibernation timeout set. I also find that the system
won't hibernate automatically when the system is in standby and the battery
gets low. There are no errors or messages in the Event Log for either of
these situations.

I can manually standby and hibernate and the system will hibernate
automatically when the battery is low if I'm using the tablet. The tablet
also correctly goes into standby and hibernation according to the Power
Options when connected to AC power. The problems only seem to happen when
the tablet is running on battery power.

Has anyone else had a similar problem in Windows or on a Tablet PC? If so,
what could be causing it and how do I fix it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this problem is really annoying at
the moment.

Thanks,
Mark

I am SOOOOOOOOOOO not the person to ask BUT I have an idea... I'd type this
message again with a PING TERRI in front of it ;) But, really.... Go ahead
and head to the Motion site or use the Windows Update site (not automatic
updates as that only gets critical updates) and look for new ACPI software.
I just recently got another Motion and it's fully updated and I don't THINK
it has that problem as it's gone into hibernation mode on it's own already a
few times and I'm 90% sure it was on battery at that time. I'd say that's an
ACPI function and I'd look for updates for that specifically.

Unfortunately I already have all the updates from Windows Update installed
and all the latest version of the software and BIOS (A04) from the Motion
site.

Thanks any way

Since the bios controls the operation for standby ( i belive) its the bios
itself that has the ability to return to windows when the hibernate
operation is called.
Though, when in standby, the computer, and windows are essentially asleep.
So windows has no idea what time it even is, nor the ability to call
hibernate.
Depending on the ACPI dlls (I belive, again) the power save is either a
function of windows, or the bios. So if the bios has the ability to tell
windows, go into hibernate, then it can wake itself from the standby and
hibernate. If the bios doesnt, well back to the fact windows is sleeping!
So saying that your other computer can do it, and the tablet can't means
that the tablet cant because the maker decided to be cheap in the bios and
not add that ability. (I have seen motions and i'm not saying that they are
cheap! or cheaply made!!!!)
Hope that helps you understand?

The tablet does support it.

Just found what the problem was. Turned out it was the video driver of all
things. The tablet has an Intel 852/855 graphics controller and I had
installed the latest drivers (14.11). Downgraded to an earlier version
(14.9) and now it's working fine. Very annoying though....who would have
thought the graphics drivers would be the issue???

Thanks everyone for your help.
