My laptop has taken to restarting itself when I turn it onto Standby. I have
tried altering power settings but nothing prevents it turning itself back on
seconds after it has been set to standby. Virus and spyware scans have
produced no possible reasons. Anyone any advice?

Look at your Event Viewer for any errors. The Event Viewer can be accessed
here:

Control Panel > Administration Tools > Event Viewer.

When you find the stop code error, if any, then please go to the following
web site and look on the left and right hand columns for your error.

Also you should disable XP from automatically restarting on a system
failure. You can achieve this by

Control Panel > System Properties > Advance Tab > Startup and Recovery
Settings > uncheck "automatically restart".

Write down the stop code and visit the web site that I mentioned before.

I tried both suggestions, and whilst I found about 10 errors, none of them
matched up to the ones on the website. It says the name was Application Hang
and most of them were no. 1001/1002. Any further suggestions other than
having to send the machine away to be repaired?
