SP2 virus monitoring

I have NAV 2003 on my computer and NAV 2004 on my wife's computer. 2004
updates correctly, but 2003 doesn't. Not sure about a fix for this. I will
be upgrading the 2003 when the definitions subscription runs out later this
year.

I have NAV 2004 and LiveUpdate whateverversioncamewiththis and after it
downloaded all updates, it said for me to start LiveUpdate again because
there is another update waiting for me. I did that and it was the WMI
update. It updated and then the dialog box asking me if I want to stop
other apps detecting the status of Norton came up. I put a check mark in
(meaning yes I wanted to stop other programs from detecting status of
Norton) and OK'd it. Now the Security Center is happy (after I told it it
can manage my antivirus monitoring).

Denny:

You're the first person to authoritatively confirm my suspicions that
NAV 2004 has the WMI updates available, but that NAV 2003 does not.

If you look at this Symantec document:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...213?OpenDocument&tpre=&csm=no&src=con_web_nam
you can read that NAV 2002, 2003, and 2004 should be covered by the
WMI update.

I'm guessing, again, the Symantec is behind the ball and releasing the
updates as they get developed and tested.

Frank:

I do believe that the SP2 update is only being downloaded for NAV 2004
installations. I have tried Live Update with the 2002 and 2003
versions and no WMI update comes down. Only on my personal 2004 NAV
system have I been successful.

I thought I read at one point that the WMI update should be valid for
NAV 2002 - 2004, but reality, as is so often the case with Symantec,
seems to tell us differently.

I don't imagine there is much we can do until Symantec gets their act
together on this.

Norton Firewall/Norton Internet Security
Installing Service Pack 2 will have no affect on Norton
Personal Firewall or Norton Internet Security. The Windows
Security Center will be aware that you have one of these
products installed, but it will not be able to determine
their working status due to
"""Symantec's tamper-protection technology."""

Looks to me like a cop out....

Not really.

How would SP2 query anti-malware software?
How would malware not be able to do the same thing?

More like "too many cooks" :-)

For your information, Symantec has, for the last week, had updates
available through LiveUpdate for its Security Products which enable
them to report their presence and status to the Windows Security
Center.

I am currently running Norton Personal Firewall 2004, and it reports
to Windows Security Center that it is turned on and working. Norton
Antivirus 2004 also reports that it is turned on and up-to-date.

I know. But the explanation that this issue was related to
"tamper-protection" is likely sound.

It's to Symantec's credit that, unlike MS where everything is left so
easy for "remote admin" that almost any malware presence allows
settings to be shot to pieces, NAV at least *tries* to hide from
processes that want to query it or shut it down.

So when SP2 tries to query it, it fails; to "fix" that, Symantec would
have to accomodate SP2. Hopefully without accomodating malware that
just looks like SP2, however.
