REQ: My Norton Antivirus 2003 clashes with XP SP2?

Y

young

My Norton Antivirus 2003 doesn't seem to want to install/update with
XP with SP2. It was working fine with SP1.

I upgraded to SP2 after uninstalling NAV (because I was told to do
that), and then I tried to re-install NAV.

I installs okay but of course wants to do a live update. When
applying those updates to CommonClient, NAV2003 hangs, and I have to
delete the tasks. Subsequently the NAV window shows that it is not
running right and that I have no protection, not even emails.

What can I do?

Thank you

One option is to uninstall NAV, uninstall SP2, install NAV and update
it, then turn off Auto Protect. Install SP2, then turn auto protect
back on, and run live update several times to get the update to allow it
to talk to the SP2 Security Center. There was no need to uninstall NAV
to install SP2. Just don't have auto protect running.

Also when uninstalling NAV go the Symantec web site and get their
utility to remove it.

Uninstall NAV 2003 again, but this time also use the registry cleaner
from Symantec. "RNAV2003.EXE" You can download it from the Symantec
Web site. After completely cleaning the registry using rnav2003.exe,
reinstall NAV 2003 again and run live update. There is an update for
Live Update also.... kind of confusing, but you'll need that too.

You should also download the WMI update for the SP2 security center.
That, however, will be part of the downloads after running live
update. Warning here.... Be sure to reboot your machine after each
major update to NAV 2003 or you'll run into trouble again.

Does a more XP friendly AV exist? I have just gotten a machine with XP on it
and have not yet installed an AV. I have a NAV 2003 CD from the machine it
replaced. Should I upgrade to NAV 2005 first?

What about Mcafee (sp?)?

I will be interested to see answers to your qustion. I still am
sitting here without virus protection because NAV2003 has flunked out
under WXP-SP2.

There are several good alternatives, Mcafee is not one of them. AVG
antivirus and CA etrust are two. AVG has a free version that runs well.

Well, CS, not according to my NAV2003 experiences.
I just installed a copy and it did all the updates right in a row, with an
OK FYI screen in between. It told me when to re-boot, I did and it did
another auto Liveupdate. I re-bootted later and the AdWare indicated a final
registery change. This install was a bit different because it had the newest
updates available online and the WMI.
It's not wise to hold on to what was happening even 6 months ago with auto
updated installs, they change and change again.

I think the key may be clicking on express updates and clciking on do it all
automatically without telling me?

And, there were spots where it delayed, waited, but it wasn't HUNG. In fact,
that was the slickest Norton install ever. It was on a 3 and 1/2 year old
Pent III runing XP Pro Sp2.

... been there.... done that, ...that's why Norton is off my system and I
have avast!
far better and doesn't "whine" like Norton.
