SP2 and modem problems

I have a 3-year-old ARM laptop running Win XP Pro with a
Smart Link V.90 voice dial-up modem...
After installing the latest Service Pack from Microsoft my
modem behavior has changed...
The session noises coming from my modem sound as though 2
sessions are taking place at once (sort of like an echo).
It takes several attempts to establish a connection.
I downloaded and installed the latest driver from Smart
Link, only to find that Windows no longer recognized my
modem at all...so I ran the system restore wizard.
Can anyone help me fix my modem?

Jim.
Contact the manufacturer and verify SP-2 compatibility with the latest
driver.
Otherwise you may need a newer modem.
