Win Update install problem

Jim

I run Windows xp pro on a 2 year old ARM laptop.
Eveytime I install the latest Windows Update, my modem
experiences problems...
After install, when I attempt to run my dial-up
connection, I do not hear the sounds coming from the
session. Also, I get the message "There is no dial tone.."
when I attempt to connect. It usually connects, after
several attempts.
I have restored my system to an earlier time, and have not
perminently installed the update yet.
Does anyone have an answer to my problem?

Thank you for your time....

My guess is that the Windows Update list includes driver updates for
your modem. You need to look at the updates for installation and not
install any driver updates. It is always better to go to the mftr.'s
website for driver updates. With a modern modem, there really won't be
any need for you to change a driver that is working anyway.

Malke,
Thank you for taking time to reply to my post.
I cannot decipher from their descriptions which updates,
if any, would change my modem driver. So I don't know
which one to delete.
The SmartLink modem website offers a download, but I can't
tell if it is an upgrade for my current driver or the same.
I have had problems upgrading this computer in the past
(xp home to xp pro), and don't want to disable my modem
again. I depend on it too much.
At this time, I am not going to install any other
Microsoft updates to this system.

Thanks again for your time...
Jim
