Hi, A Motherboard failure that took out the CPU and one hard drive
resulted in:
A new Motherboard, CPU and Hard drives with WinXP SP2 ghosted from my old
hard drive.

Things seem to be OK, but for :
1. Win Update site scans my PC and after offering SP3 (refused) :
a. "Review other updates"
b. "Need to download/install latest version of update"
c. "Update Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 failed to update"
Any attempt to review my update history gets me nowhere.

(I read that MSI.DLL Ver 3.1.4000.1823 was replaced by Ver 3.1.4000.2435
(Feb 2005) but the version I have is 3.0.3790.2180 which seems a bit old)
I have downloaded the latest ver of MSI 3.1 but not game to install it
because of the "backup your system" warning.

The other problems are :
1. Help and Support "index" is blank ,and
2. Outlook Express is not creating backup files in the recycle bin, when
"deleting/compacting"

Any help appreciated

I can't be sure, but those look like Win2K numbers, not XP.

I can only help you with the problem of OE not creating bak files in the
Recycle Bin. You have a completely unpatched version of XP/SP2 released on
8/06/04.

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180

Not until a cumulative patch was released on 12/12/06 did OE start creating
bak files.

See the information in the red box here:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2

You need to start updating, but your other issues may have priority at the
moment.

Thanks, looks like WinXP has "lost" a lot of the update info and
hotfixes.
(I compared a "Belarc Advisor scan" from Mar 08 with one today)
Oh where to start :)

You can go right from where you are now to SP3 and not bother with anything
inbetween as it will all be included in SP3.

That is interesting to know. I thought a new motherboard created
the need for a reauthorization of Windows XP. For instance, if
you just had to replace the mobo, and still had the hard old drive
working, I thought there would be a complaint about the new mobo.

It would create a need for activation. But, it is absolutely trivial to
address this need if you have a legal license.

If you haven't had to activate in the last few months, you can almost
certainly activate over the net in seconds.

At worst, you'll be presented with a toll-free phone number and the process
will take minutes. Simply tell the rep that you had to reinstall due to a
crash, it is the same system, read them the install key, and you'll be given
a 40-character or so string to enter. And then you're done with
activation.

In the case above, however, there's another issue if the motherboard is not
an identical model to the original. If the hardware differs, some drivers
will be invalid, and a repair install is usually the best approach, even
starting from a restored image. It will then be necessary to install the
latest service pack (if the ghosted image is pre-SP1, that or SP2 will have
to be nstalled before SP3). And the OP clearly hasn't installed all the
updates.

The Motherboard is completely different to the old one.
Looks like the shop ghosted my fully patched WinXP, then a repair install
etc.
(I don't know if they "activated" it)

The Update problem has been fixed as suggested by :
Using Resolution 1 from < http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 >
(which now allows me access to Windows Update and 95 updates, even though
the "uninstall record" in the Windows directory, shows them all as being
done :)

Thanks Bruce, I am still a bit timid about SP3 :)
(Although the suggested fix with Wups2.dll has got Win Update working now)
I wonder if I should delete the "uninstall files from the previous
updates?

C:\WINDOWS\$MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB888111WXPSP2$
Contains (among other stuff) a heap of files :
C:\WINDOWS\01 Rollbacks\$NtUninstallKB823182$ (2004)
to
C:\WINDOWS\01 Rollbacks\$NtUninstallKB951698$ (2008)
