Windows Update

Some time ago whenever I attempt to do a Windows Update I get a list of the
updates but when I try to install them all of the updates fail to down
load. Each is listed in the update panel but after each listed update I
get the failed message.

Any thoughts as to what would prevent the updates from downloading and
installing?

Malware is one reason. Another is some anti-virus could cause this too.
and I am sure others will post other reasons for this.

Agreed. Especially as there are a slew of BITS related posts appearing
recently which are *usually* caused by malware or 'certain' antivirus
programs. Another factor appears to possibly be the recently pushed out
release of the Windows Update Agent.

@ Marv ... see this: How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Try another attempt at updating. If it still fails to download them,
close the browser or the update window.
Open the WindowsUpdate.log in WINDOWS.
Scroll all the way to the bottom for the most recent entries and post at
least the last 50 or so lines of the log into your reply, please.

What we're looking for are FATAL and/or WARNING errors.

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2. [WinXP ONLY!! =>] Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
