Sound Problem

I would be very grateful if someone could help me with this prob. I
am running WindowsXP on my Dell laptop and I'm having a VERY WEIRD
sound problem. On Friday I was listening to a CD via headphones. I
removed the headphones from the jack and expected to continue hearing
my music as I moved around the room, instead, I heard NOTHING! I
reinserted the headphones into the jack and could hear the CD continue
to play. I thought it was a driver problem, so I reinstalled it,
still no sound without headphones. I called Dell and they told me
that there was nothing wrong with my speakers because we ran a
diagnostic from the reinstallation cd and I could hear sounds. The
problem has since escalated. I still can't hear sound unless I plug
in headphones, but now, sound only comes through on the left
headphone. My system is only 6 months old. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE
can anyone help me. Thank you in advance :0)

Where is the headphone jack located, on the front of a speaker, front or
back of the tower, by the CR-ROM tray?

If on the speakers, try other speakers as a test.

Joe, the headphone jack is located on the side of my laptop, my
speakers are integrated into the laptop.

My thought was, that if the jack was related to CD sounds only, the jack
could be damaged, not springing back when the plug is removed. If this
were the case, the .wav sounds would still be heard. This isn't reading
like it's the problem though.

This site may offer a suggestion or two.

Where did my sounds go?
