Sound problem

I'm having trouble - I think it might be to do with my sound card.

*The Volume Control and mixer controls are greyed in, so that I can't touch
them in the Control Panel.

*I've been into the device Manager, and my PC thinks everything's
functioning fine.

*Could installing Service Pack 2 have upset my sound?

My sound card is called 'Intel(r) 82801AA AC'97 Audio Controller'.. and I
have Legacy Audio drivers... Some other parts of my PC have the same
...'82801' number in their title.. does that mean that all those bits are
connected, and I don't have a separate Sound card? Do you know if I need a
driver for the whole lot?

I am very confused!

Hi,

Did you install the drivers for the sound card. The drivers will be part of
the mother board drivers and will be on the Cd that came with your
motherboard. or else you can download the drivers from the website and then
install it.

Thanks for your help M,

I don't have the drivers that came with my motherboard, because I acquired
my computer through a University computer recycle scheme.

Do you know where I could safely download the right drivers?
I have been on the Intel site, because I think everything is Intel in the
machine, but I'm not sure how to find out the exact model... without opening
my computer, and I wouldn't like to do that. Will device manager tell me? Or
System Information in the Accessories menu? What is it named, do you know?

Thank you for your reply.
