No Audio Device

My computer recently had a RAM failure. Following replacement of the RAM,
everything is working fine except my sound card. My computer is a Dell
Dimension 8400 with Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3 installed. The
sound card is Creative Laboratories - Sound Blaster Live!24.

When I check the Device Manager, it says that the device is running
properly. However, when I check the Control Panel - Sounds & Audio Device
Properties, it says that no audio device is installed.

When I run the diagnostics from Creative Labs, it gives me the following:
Hardware Detection = Pass
Wave Driver = Fail
MIDI Driver = Fail
Mixer Driver = Fail
DirectSound 3D Driver = Fail
Mixer Settings Check = Fail

I have tried the following fixes, but still no luck:
1.) Uninstalled the Sound Blaster Live software and re-installed from the
OEM disc that came with the computer.
2.) Ran the Windows Sound Troubleshooter and followed out all potential
paths.
3.) Installed the sound blaster device in another PCI slot.
4.) Checked BIOS to ensure that the integrated audio was off
5.) Tried the solutions mentioned in the Kellys – Corner article “Where Did
the Sounds Goâ€
6.) I even purchased a second sound card to see if it was a problem with my
original card. I could not get that card to work either.

I would appreciate any additional suggestions for potential fixes. Thanks
in advance.

Before you reinstalled blaster, did you remove the device from device
manager and reboot before the installation?

Ron,

Thanks for the response. I couldn't remember if I did this or not, and so
repeated it tonight. Here are the steps I took: 1.) Removed device from
device manager. 2.) Uninstalled Sound Blaster software. 3.) Shutdown
computer. 4.) Unplugged computer power from wall for 1-minute 5.)
Re-started computer 6.) Installed Sound Blaster Software, 7.) Re-booted
computer again.

I still have the same result of No Audio Device installed.

Have you tried doing a System Restore?

A problem that occurred occasionally with W98 (I don't know if it happens
with XP) is that there would be "ghost" or duplicate devices that would only
show up in device manager when the PC was booted in safe mode. This would
only take a couple of minutes to check and if there are duplicates, delete
all of them and use your installation procedures.

Enter setup on boot (F2 key), select on board devices and make sure
integrated audio is turned off.

If that is OK and if it is feasible, try a system restore as recommended by
Hodges. If that doesn't help, your sound card may have failed also.

I happen to have an 8400 but I have onboard audio so I am unable to
experiment.

Which Creative software did you reinstall, the driver(s) or apps? If
drivers only, try installing the PITA apps...you need a mixer.
