No Preferred audio device avail w/drivers loaded & XP audio servic

Hi

I saw this same situation a couple of years ago, but didn't find an
answer. Audio quits working and a preferred audio device is not available to
be slected for the sound card.

Checked the following......

1 Audio driver installed (no errors in control panel)
2 Windows Audio service is started under services.
3 Updates driver with no effect
4 System restore cannot restore to a date when the sound was
working properly. (restore fails)
5 System has integrated sound, installing an aftermarket sound
card and drivers does not fix problem (still no audio devices available under
sounds and audio devices in control panel).

Suspect registry has a bad entry????

Any thoughts besides reloading windows???

No luck. Here is my perception of the problem. When you add an audio
device, windows creates audio devices that can be select for audio
input/output. With a sound card installed with the drivers loaded, there are
not any audio devices available to select.

Thanks

Jim

With a sound card installed with the drivers loaded, there
are not any audio devices available to select.

Select from where?

Has the onboard audio device been disabled in the BIOS?

Accessing Motherboard BIOS
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

Has it been uninstalled in the Device Manager?

Open the Device Manager...
Start | Run | Type: devmgmt.msc | Click OK |
[+] Sound, video and game controllers |

Remove the onboard device.

Also look for any of the following...

Device Manager Device Conflicts
[[A black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field indicates the device is in
a problem state. Note that a device that is in a problem state can be
functioning.

A problem code explaining the problem is displayed for the device.

A red "X" indicates a disabled device. A disabled device is a device that is
physically present in the computer and is consuming resources, but does not
have a protected-mode driver loaded.

A blue "i" on a white field on a device resource in Computer properties
indicates that the Use Automatic Settings feature is not selected for the
device and that the resource was manually selected. Note that this does not
indicate a problem or disabled state.

A green question mark "?" in Device Manager means that a compatible driver
for this device is installed, indicating the possibility that all of the
functionality may not be available. ]]
