Strange sound problem

Andrew Wilson

My Graphics card is an ATI and my monitor connects to the card with a HDMI
cable. I have used the monitor speakers to play sounds previously but it has
stopped working for some reason. In Device Manager/Sound, Video and game
controllers I have listed:
ATI Function Driver for High Definition Audio ATI AA01
Audio codecs
Realtek High Definition Audio
for audio amongst other video entries.
Is this correct or should I only be using one sound program? None of the
programs are muted and volume is set to halfway.
Many thanks

Andrew, go back into Device Manager and try disabling the ATI HD Audio
driver if you can.

Thanks for that. If I disable the ATI I can get sound only through Realtek
via the portable speakers i.e not from the monitor (I'm sure Realtek offered
the monitor speaker option previously). If I enable ATI and make it the
default device it only offers ATI HD Audio rear output i.e monitor speakers
only and doesn't offer the portable speakers option. When I select the ATI
and try and play something no sound is heard from the monitor. By the way I
forgot to mention that under Device Manager/Sound, Video and game
controllers there is a Legacy Audio Drivers listed.
Many thanks

Forgot to mention if I enable ATI and select ATI HD Audio rear output I get
nothing from the monitor speakers but if I switch the portable speakers on I
get sound.
Thanks

Andrew, I am unfamiliar with the setup that you describe. I could
recommend a couple of good hardware forum sites such as
www.anandtech.com, www.tomshardware.com and www.guru3d.com

After playing around I think I have solved it. After enabling everything
again I changed default sound back to ATI (rear output). There was still no
sound so I right clicked the Realtek icon. Under Sound Manager and on the
Playback part of the window I clicked the '+' a few times which happily
restored sound to the monitor speakers. I had not noticed or for that matter
ever changed this setting before so it's probably reset itself to zero
volume somehow and I never realised. Thanks for your time and help anyway.
Regards
Andrew
