Sound card detected but MIDI and OS sounds don't play

I have Windows XP SP2
My soundcard is a M/B integrated CMI 9739(SIS 7012)
While my sound worked fine, suddenly windows sounds do not play (eg When you
receive a message in messenger)
I checked Control Panel->Sounds and everything is OK, the preview button
works!
MIDI does not work but I don't worry very much about that.
Games and WMP play sound without problems.
When I click the "sound" icon in the taskbar and change the volume instead
of beeping through the sound card it beeps through the M/B speaker (LOL!)

Thank you for reading

If you right click the "sound icon in the taskbar" (volume control) and left
click OPEN VOLUME CONTROL then select OPTIONS

1st select PROPERTIES and select everything, from there you may be able to
determine the problem.

I doubt this will actually help, but you could try running the DX
Diagnostics sound tests, these will point out any hardware related issues,
particularly your midi issue.

start menu | run: dxdiag.exe
