loss of system sounds only

I have home ed, sp2. Music, videos, cd's all play sound fine. BUT, all
windows own sounds are gone. no beeps, dings or dongs, no email
notifications, msn nudges, or sound effects. I have checked the sound
profile and I have one active, HOWEVER, the
'preview' button for the individual sound is not active. In my sounds
properties, the default MIDI player is empty, i click on it and select my
sound board,(its the only one there), and uncheck the 'use default only' then
apply and close.
If i re-open it again straight away, it's back to how it was before, empty
with the 'use default only' checked again.
I cant change the midi voice and it stays changed, it keeps reverting to
previous state.
I have installed no new hard/software recently and a system restore DIDNT
help.
All drivers for the soundcard have been removed and reinstalled, as have all
directx sound components. I have applied the reg fixes from "kelly's corner"
but the problem still remains. All the sound names in the sound profiles
windows have a small speaker by them so they should be active, the computer
does "appear" to play them but nothing comes out the speakers!
thanks for taking the time to read.
please help!!!

Silly question ... but are the sounds that are supposed to be playing for
these system events on your computer? Maybe they were removed accidently ...

Sorry, forgot that bit, all files required are present in the
c:\windows\media dir and ALL play fine through winamp. they also all exist in
the current sound profile.
I have found that MIDI file won't play either at the moment.
thanks

I regularly lose my Windows sounds after playing videos and music on an
alternative source, usually the restore facility puts things back in order
but remember to update all AV's etc again afterwards.
