Tech help messed up my laptop

hello, I have windows xp on my laptop(sony vaio).
I have been getting no sound as of yesterday and when I go into the sound
control area everything is gray. When I go into the control panel and into
sound it gives me an error message that says sndvol32.exe file missing go
into add/remove programs... so I went to the tech help and was told to do a
recovery by shutting down my computer and pressing F10. When the computer
came back up I did just that and now it says NTLDR is missing to press
CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart, which I have many times and it does restart but it
goes back to that NTLDR is missing. I am now on my desktop which has vista so
I cannot access the live help. Does anyone have an answer to my problem?

"Invalid Boot.ini" or "Windows could not start" error messages when you
start your computer

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330184

Try to rebuild the boot.ini by doing this command line:

Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot.ini
DEL C:\boot.ini
to remove the bad boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild

Make sure the HDD is okay by running a test for it, download the diagnostic
tools from the HDD manufacturer website.
