No sound, sndvol32.exe file missing??

Hi can anyone help me?
My computer came with Realtek AC97 speakers
installed last November 2005 and they have been working fine up to today. No
sound is coming from them and I have tried all the obvious solutions i.e not
plugged in, volume not turned up(!), device not enabled, device on mute etc
and to no avail. All these are fine. However when I go onto "sound, and audio
devices properties" -> "Audio" I can see that the Realtek AC97 speakers are
the default speakers still, but when I click on the "volume..." button I am
given this message:

" Windows Error.
Windows cannot execute sndvol32.exe use Add/Remove Programs in control
panel to install. "

Somehow I think an important file has been lost. Though no idea as to how!!
I dont have a CD to reinstall the speakers if that is needed does anyone know
how I can get my speakers working again? My default monitor speakers don't
work either so is this a problem with Windows XP installation files? Ive
searched the computer for the missing file, it's not there! can Re-Install
it without having to uninstall and re-install XP again completely!? If so
please could someone let me know and guide me through this process?

Try to extract it from XP CD. To do this: Start > Run and type "cmd"
without the quotes. In the new screen type:

expand e:\i386\sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

Note the above order states that your CD drive is E: and your XP is
installed on C: If not, change the letters.
