Sndvol32.exe file missing

I'm getting an error message that says the 'sndvol32.exe' file is damaged or
missing. I searched for it...it is indeed missing. I found one that is
titled "sndvol32.ex_" but I don't know what to do with that one (I'm not that
advanced w/the computer). I have no CD's to use to reinstall anything on
this computer because I bought it from one of those lease-to-own places (not
so reputable it turns out) and now that it's paid off they won't give me any
restoration CD's that came with it. I'm not sure why this file is
missing...is it a big deal and if it is how can I get it without spending a
fortune? So far, the only thing I can't do is place the volume icon in the
toolbar tray...I'm just concerned about what may happen next...any
suggestions? Thanks.

Rename the file by changing the .ex_ to .exe Check if the program then
works.

The trailing _ means the file is compressed. You need to expand it first, in
order to execute the file. Use the information in the following article to
learn how to expand the file.

Volume Icon Is Not Displayed in the Notification Area, and You Receive an
Error Message When You Try to Add It:

Ramesh,
As I mentioned in my e-mail, I have no Windows XP CD...and I mentioned why.
I have already been to the site you referred to, but could not perform that
solution because I don't have the CD. Where can I get that CD?

Hi Charlene,

Click Start then click Run. Type in msconfig and click OK. Click Expand
File. Type in the name of the file to restore. Locate the folder where
sndvol32.ex_ resides. Use Browse From. Use Browse To to select
C:\Windows\System32 to Save file in. Repeat the process to Save file in
C:\Windows\System32\dllcache.

sndvol32.exe is located in two places on my computer. Once you finished
restoring the file in both places, then reboot the computer.

Problem Solved! Thank you so much! You wouldn't believe how long I've been
trying to fix this (or how many MS techs I have talked to) and once someone
finally figured out what I was telling them, it took all of two minutes to
resolve. Actually, I didn't even have to go thru all the steps you
mentioned. Once I got into the System Configuration menu (my first time
there!), I started looking at all those little boxes - some unchecked. Didn't
know what they were exactly, but I looked for any that had to do with sound
volume or Sound Blaster 24-bit...stuff like that. I found one, checked the
box...problem solved! Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!

Charlene,

From your original post, I observed that the sndvol32.ex_ file is present in
your hard drive. You simply use the Expand command, using the example given
in the Microsoft Knowledgebase article. But, mention the path to the
sndvol32.ex_ file in the hard drive, instead of the CD-ROM drive-letter.
